Sometimes the lack of concern for the customer can be appalling, especially in intermittent problems like this. What a tech really needs to do is analyze the complaint, and to just realize that the owner isn't out there just to make the techs' life hard. Sometimes I get the impression that some techs think the owner is "lying" about a problem happening. WHY would an owner make up a story like this? Nothing better to do than bring their car in for service? Just a little bored and nothing better to do than "bother" a tech needlessly?
