Fcuk! My house sometimes looks like that. Convict ME! Throw me in jail for being a terrible housekeeper.
I think there might have been more to the story. Sometimes people don't know how to handle things like that. Who knows, maybe they weren't ready to be a parent, maybe they grew up like that.
I don't know what to say. Sometimes there are no warning signs, or maybe we're just too blind to notice them. Depression is a major cause of suicide, but in the past we've frequently been misled to believe that depression and mental illness doesn't occur in children. Maybe this will be a wakeup call.
