Self-appointed? Hardly. One does not "appoint" onesself to the most successful talk radio show in the history of radio. One must have LISTENERS to accomplish that. He wouldn't have the most listeners if he wasn't saying SOMETHING that a LOT of people want to hear.
Cheerleading??? If you're talking to me, perhaps you should re-read my post, and notice that I often DON'T agree with Rush, I listen to him very sporadically, and I'm definitely not on any crusade to defend him for being a pill-popper. I've always thought addiction to ANYTHING is a sign of weakness, and still do.
As to the original two questions: I don't know, and I don't care. Doesn't make anything he has said or done any more valid or any less valid.
