James, I received a number of prescriptions from my doctor at the time of my surgery (he did Tiger Woods' knee a couple of months after mine and he's the team orthopod for the US Ski/Snowboard Team, I think he knows what he's doing). One was for nausea; I never felt any, so I didn't take any of those. Others, including Oxycontin, were for pain. My doctor was fully aware of my choice to only take as much as I needed, and he approved. As to what I do with the leftovers, I'm quite qualified to make that decision, thank you. I'm not at all confused about the medication I took, I'm looking at the bottle of Oxycontin as I type (10mg x 30). BTW, I never even heard of Oxycontin prior to my surgery; I took it at my doctor's suggestion, and was happy I did. I don't believe that only certain doctors can prescribe it, at least not in my state.
As for my colleague, he's heard of pain management clinics and so have his doctors. They've probably spent a bit more time on the issue than you have. You're welcome to believe or disbelieve me as you choose, but I'd call it presumptuous to suggest that someone is addicted without a) a lot more professional expertise than you can derive from a couple of conversations with doctors, and b) knowledge of that individual's specific case.
