According to the FSM for the 123 chassis, the front crossmember and the differential are both acceptable jack points.

One problem with only using the side jack points is that occasionally the leg of the jack will interfere with where you wnat to locate the jackstand or, you need access to the place on the chassis (ie: the subfame bushing) where the jackstand would be located.
