I'm assuming you are referring to the ones as they were installed in the W115 chassis. There are numerous differences. Older 240D engines had the oil filter installed down in an (almost) impossible to reach place on the block. The series glow plugs are another difference, and they also had a pneumatic governor, and thusly a butterfly valve in the throttle similar to a gasser engine.
