The difference is between "returnable" bottles vs throw-aways, mostly. The cap on the twistys is lighter material, too, and doesn't seal as well. Not a problem on American "light" beer, since it has essentially no flavor to lose, but all imported beers have standard crown caps. I don't know if it is a legal requirement or not, but long distance shipping can cause twistys to leak.

There are some domestic beers that still have standard crown caps, mostly microbrewery beers.

Eliminate the non-return bottles, and the twisty would probably dissapear, too -- too many bottles would fail to seal the second and third (or more) time.
