I've not run my car that many times...most people just back off, presumably because they don't know what my car is (de-badged 500E) and aren't sure if they want to find out.
However, there's always Trigger to be counted on....why do Mustang owners think their cars are so fast (I owned one of the original 5.0s, an '82 black on black...best holeshots ever, but not very fast)??
Cruising down to CT from NH a few months back (averaging around 90-100, which I'm sure other 500E owners will agree is loafing)a Mustang I believe with a blower was merging onto the freeway from the lefthand side. Because I was overtaking traffic I was already in the left lane, so I slowed down to let the Mustang on. Well, he gets on and only brings it up to 65 or so, but won't relinquish the left lane! I tried the blinker, I hung back off his left flank, but he wouldn't move. I never flashed my lights, though; too rude, and if a person needs that much of a hint they're clueless anyway.
In any event, the center lane opened up, I flipped on my turn signal and went to the center. Well, just as I did so the Mustang started to shake, made a bunch of noise and tiny puffs of smoke came from the tailpipes...so I figured he wanted to run. Well, if you boot a 500E at 65 MPH it jumps immediately into third in the fat part of the cams and then takes off like a shot. Which is precisely what I did. It was like the 'stang threw out a boat anchor!! I was at 125+ before he figured out his trousers were around his ankles...I tried to get him to play some more, but he promptly got off the next exit. Probably on the way to his speed shop to figure out why his blower was broken...
As to running the car at the 1/4, I've beaten a bunch of Mustangs (icl. a Cobra and an '92 with a blower, which I beat by almost a second!), a couple of Z28s, a Type R Integra and, believe it or not, an E55. The E55 was relatively new, though, so maybe it wasn't broken in.
Love my 500E!
