When I turn my steering wheel either left or right and not straightened it out. I get about 1-2 inches of play on the steering wheel. Any ideas?

How do I explian this better? I turn the steering wheel either left or right. leave it turned, then move the steering wheel enough that it won;t turn the wheels but I get a little play in the wheel.

I think it's the steering box? I read it was adjustable. Whats invovled in adjusting it? Is it costly?
