Mine was a 1981 BMW - but the point is that the vehicle was not imported. It was a US model but DMV did not believe it was a US model. The true facts are irrelevant if you have to fight with DMV, so the risk is having to go through a huge ordeal to register a vehicle. Several thousand dollars means at least 3,000.
