Yes, there should be a stored code. I'd get it looked at, it can lead to problems.
There is a service campaign on the low range motor control unit, if it hasn't been done yet, it should be a free update, assuming your truck is part of the campaign.
The switch inside the motor unit (electric motor that switches the low range on and off) I'm afraid you'd have to pay for. It's a couple hundred buch part, easy to replace if you work on your own stuff.
