The early O2 lights were just a maintenance light designed to allow MB to pass the requirements of the EPA for system durability. They were required to work for 50,000 miles with only so many failures. By requiring the sensors to be replaced at 30k whether they were bad or not they decreased the total failures per 50k miles.
The maintenance procedure for those models was to remove the light at the 30k interval and from there on there wasn't a interval.
