I spent some time searching, and can't find where this question has been answered before.

I have a '92 500E, and the climate control fan is starting to chirp. On many cars, the fan is very near the heater core. With almost 220,000 miles, should I go ahead and replace the heater core while doing the fan, to save labor from an almost certain core repair down the road?

Also, I have changed a heater core in a few cars, to include a 525i BMW. Should I tackle this one myself, or is the 500E much more difficult? Are any special tools required?
