Replacement transmissions run $3000 & labor, and on the 1996 to 1998 cars you will need a $800 computer to operate that replacement transmission. Fluid & filter change runs $200-$250.

I read in one of your previous responses to the same question that at 30k you would change the trans fluid, but would hesitate at 60k, something about "adaptation". Just curious if you still feel the same way and if you can elaborate on this.
Thanx much guys, I'm figuring better safe than sorry, than worrying about a measly $200 bucks versus 4k for a new tranny.
By the way on my 1996 SL500 trans change will they drain the torque converter automatically, or do I have to specify that they do this? Is this really a big deal that I should worry about?
