I'd suggest converting to an electric fan with a seperate t-stat setup if you have to do this regularly. It should help keep the engine temp up. Adjustable t-stats for the fan are available also and pretty easy to retrofit to almost anything.
JimSmith covered the rest of it. These are increadibly long lived motors, any shortening of the life expectancy this or some other "abuse" may have on it are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The motor may well outlive you.
And if you think these are bad for not keeping a cabin warm in dead cold, try an old VW diesel.. Brrr!
