I find that actually idling heats up my engine (slowly), even in cold weather. I sit at school every morning for 15 min idling and I watch the temperature needle slowly move up past the 80C mark even on the coldest of days here. I find that idling actually heats up the tranny slightly as well due to the tranny cooling lines. Funny how cooling lines have the reverse effect eh? If I start up in the morning when she's dead cold and don't let her warm up the shifts are significantly harsher than if I let her idle until the speed drops from 1000 to 750. So on nights like tonight where I don't plug her in, I will go out a little early start her up and let her idle before I leave for school. I do notice, however, that with all this idling my fuel mileage drops significantly, but I don't care.
