In CT, they used to give you a form that stated you had a replacement windshield installed - you took that and the pieces of the old sticker to the inspection station and they gave you a new sticker. They've since done away with stickers here, you just keep a copy of the emissions test with your registration. The shop that does the glass for you will know exactly how your state handles it.

The old sticker comes off in tatters, but WD-40 instantly cleans off any glue reside.
