I've done this to my TD. :p
Got two pumps. The first for $20 from a 380SEL, turned out to be corroded and got fried out. Second I got for $5 from an 84'SD and mounted next to the steering shaft. It pumps for both the locks and ACC system, can go from 0" to 24" in one minute and last for about 5 cycles and 2 days.

I have two activation switches, one when I open the driver door and one when vacuum reaches 8".

It's very nice. The transmission seems to shift better with the higher vacuum since the engine dosen't have to pump for the locks.
