Throw all the money at players....don't bother to coach or manage a winning team... Just "buy" yourself a world championship.
Got to disagree with you there. If coaching wasn't part of the equation the Mets, the Red Sox, the Redskins, the Knicks, the Orioles, and a bunch of other pro sports teams that have spent heavily in the free agent market would have won championships.
The Yankees have been spending big since the '70's but there have been plenty years when they were not competitive, and that's the difference the manager/coach makes. Joe Torre has done an amazing job handling the "Bronx Zoo." How many managers/coaches have the teams I mentioned earlier had during his run with the Yankees? It will be very interesting to see how the Yankees do absent the presence of a strong clubhouse veteran like Roger Clemens. Ditto for the Marlins absent Pudge.

The best statement about how important a great coach is, was made I believe about Bear Bryant. One of his coaching contempararies said Bear Bryant could take his 11 players and beat your 11, and then take your 11 players and beat his 11.

Too bad he liked to wear those awful hats!
