That sounds exactly like my BMW 320i when it developed a couple major vacuum leaks that got worse after a cold snap. I think the cold weather made the already failing front crank seal and something on the air intake contract enough to get blown out or sucked in.

My mechanic fixed both for under $200.

So perhaps consider a vacuum leak the problem?
