I'm sure the reason for going to a V8 was somewhat a marketing reason not a technical one. New M3, C55 have V8s, and also Audi has made something of a pledge to use more N/A engines. Also, the next RS4 will need substantially more than the old one's 380bhp, hence the V8 (probably twin-turbo).
