Before you go on a wild spending spree, try to find somebody that can read OBD I codes.
I believe there may be a way to do it yourself.
Do a search in this forum under DTC, troublecodes, OBD 1, retrieving codes, etc.
I am not familiar enough with M-B OBD I, to tell you.
Now if that was a Chevy, I could tell you how to talk to the computer with a paperclip.......really !
