Your test of the thermostat may not have been effective. Check to see if yours is a ' two temp' thermostat. Have you found the pictures I have posted from the MB manual which gives the xray cross section of the thermostat area ? It is supposed to do certain things at about 80 and then something else when it gets to a higher temp...maybe one of those functions is messed up.
