As for medmech's subject line, is the Haiti situation really a nation-building issue? Iraq is a nation-building exercise because there never was an imminent threat. By comparison, the Haiti situation was about as imminent as you can get. For better or worse, we had a part in getting Aristide elected, and then we sat back and watched the rebels throw him out. Didn't we? (Some say that we actually removed Aristide against his will. That theory seems far fetched to me.)

I don't know the facts well enough to judge the fairness of Kerry's line about Bush's actions being "late, as usual", but it seems like there is room for criticism of Bush's Haiti policy.

Regardless of whether the "late as usual" line fairly applies to Haiti, it is a good line to describe the cluelessness of Bush/Cheney/Rice/Wolfowitz/ et al. Other then their swift action against the Taliban, tell me a single issue on which that team of geniuses has been anywhere close to right.
