I would suggest asking the mechanic exactly what he replaced. I would have only replaced two or three hoses in the immediate area of the fuel pump, but since you weren't there to answer questions, he may have assumed that you wanted all hoses done which means the hoses to the evap system also. It sounds to me like a faulty or broken plastic connection somewhere in the evap system. I suspect that the fuel smell you are getting is from vapor that is supposed to be stored in a tightly sealed evap system. Hope this info helps.
