LED's have a rather monochromatic spectrum, and the eye tends to find that unpleasant when used as general illumination. That is fine for a warning light, of course. White LED's use a secondary flourescent phosphor, stimulated by a blue or UV LED. This is broader specrum, but I doubt if that is the effect you want.
