It took me nearly nine months of research/negotiating to settle on mine ['98 wagon]. After all of that research, I think I am qualified to say (1) if the price is unusually low - something is wrong with the car that the seller is not disclosing, which I think says a lot in general about the quality of these cars; and (2) you really do get what you pay for.
Under all circumstances, pay an indep. guy to put it up on the lifts and check under her skirt.
