Attended lecture on diesel injector technology

Went to an Institute of Mechanical Engineers lecture on diesel engine technology yesterday.

Quite interesting, talked about the different injector types. The guy was from Delphi (was once Lucas), so rather one-sided about their latest (common rail - a la Mercedes) technology and it's effectiveness versus volkswagen's EUI electronic Unit Injector - didn't really admit that VWs system currently makes more power and torque than common rail, even in their ancient '80s 8-valve block.

Talked about diesel's more torque and power than similar size petrols, but when it's explained it's incredibly simple technology, even now, just different takes on old fashioned pumps and nozzle openings.

Asked if he saw a move to N/A diesels in the distant future, and if they could better petrols, he said never, as diesel is only so torquey because they use a turbo. Also it will never rev high, but I didn't ask if it will ever sound so good as petrols!
