FWIW, API skipped SI because they felt it could be confused with the international system of units. SK was skipped because it could be confused with SK Corp. in Korea.
In addition to increased oxidation resistance, the new base stocks also have to meet a lower volatility specification. This means lower oil consumption, especially in the thinner weights.
