There are 3 types of rap music.. "pop" rap (AKA ludacris,p. diddy, 50cent, etc), "hip hop culture/underground" rap (Run DMC, Dead Prez, Eric B and Rakhim ) and "gangsta" rap (NWA, Tupac*, Notorious B.I.G, etc.)
1) Pop rap are the ones that you usually hear on TV and see on MTV the most. They have some poseurs with mediocre talent rapping for young teens and their motive is strictly $"bling bling"
2) The "hip hop culture/underground" rap is what "anti-war/anti-politics" songs were in the 60's. These were rap with politics, life and death oriented songs. You also find this type in real hip hop clubs, but nowadays you see more "pop"
3) "Gangsta" rap is probably what many of you think when you hear "rap". Essentially current and former street thugs rapping about hate. gangs, killings, rape, etc. Targeted audience are those who think of themselves as macho and cool,
4) "Old school" rap.. blend of the above three but are considered "old schoo" if its more than 5 years old.
*Tupac recorded various types of rap, some were "gangsta" and some were pure "hip hop"
Remember... the older folks on the forum will probably remember when all that rock from the 60's and 70's were considered "garbage" by people who are currently in your age. Each generation has their own form of music... while the previous generations look down on it. For those who like country and banjo tunes.... y'all are nothing but sissies

I thought there were only 3 types.... You listed 4 types. Hmmm....
:p Just pickin' on ya'.
Seriously, my dislike of most rap and country music is NOT a generational thing....I've been very picky and particular and some would say "snobbish" about my listening habits since I can remember. I grew up on 70's rock, 70's funk/R&B, 80's new-wave, early hip-hop, with a few bands from the 60's, and some disco songs and 80's "hair bands" thrown in the mix, and I was also a "band-geek", so I was into classical, which was VERY "uncool" to many of my peers....and a lot of all of those kinds of music sucked as well...But some of it didn't. You just have to sort through the crap to find the gems.
Screw all the genre and sub-genre crap. There are really only 2 kinds of music. Music that sucks, and music that does not suck. Unfortunately, there is much more of the former than the latter.
