Umm...I'll admit that he's been chasing fuel leaks, so I don't think he has an accurate fuel mileage record yet, but a friend of mine has an '84 euro 300D 4 speed, and I'm beating him in mileage numbers (he's getting 24 to 25, and I'm getting 27 to 30).
OTOH, his car's a lot more fun to drive

I think his mileage numbers would go far up if he switched rear ends...
