I attempted to quickly do the same thing so I wouldn't have to run to the store to purchase the appropriate tool. I didn' t have anything that wouldn't bend once I started pulling on it. I thought the best thing would be an ice pick with end bent into a "u". The snap ring pliers really weren't all that helpful...the ring's head was a little too small for both tips of the pliers to fit into. I basically put one tip into the ring and pulled that baby out.
