This problem was VERY common with '99 SLK230 Kompressors, which have the same engines as your '99 C230 Kompressor. Seemed to be related to humidity and or cool temperatures. I believe there is a TSB on the issue, and the only fix I know of is to either replace or reprogram the Engine Control Unit.
