If you want to stay in the SUV size and still have a diesel, why not check out Isuzu and Mitsubishi. Here in Guatemala they sell Diesel versions of the Trooper and the Monterro Sport. I am not too sure about the states though.

Iggy, unfortunately the diesel offering in the United States is pathetic, to say the least. I believe the Trooper was available with a diesel here in the '80's at some point, but it hasn't been available here for quite a long time.
The only diesels you can get here are the M-B CDi (not available yet), the VW TDi, the Sprinter, and th 3/4 ton & 1 ton truck/van market...I'm dreaming of the day that that changes, but I'm not holding my breath...
