Commonly when you do a shut down and the system hangs, it is because a piece of hardware or software doesn’t respond to the shut down request. It’s possible that the quick keys, which, according to your earlier post, aren’t working properly, are related to this. In fairness it could be almost anything. Take out a piece of paper and pencil do an end task for one item. After the end task succeds, try to do a shut down. If ending the task doesn’t cause a problem, note it. If it does cause a problem also note that. In the end of this you will know which programs need to be running and which ones don't. Also you’ll find out which program is not letting you shut down windows.

That said, one of the most common failures on shut down is due to a mildly defective mouse or mouse driver. It will work fine otherwise but will cause windows to hang on shut down. Again, the test is to physically remove the mouse prior to shut down and see if that solves the problem.

This may sound like a chore but you will get through it in 15 minutes or so...
