I think I read a post of Horst before; he is from Germany and the european cars do not have a VIN/data plate on the driver's door post...

If you are talking about a German car, the date of ersten Zulassung is written on the Fahrzeugbrief on page 2 behind box# 32. Page 4 has a stamped 7000 Stuttgart date...
If you are talking about any car without having the car papers to look at and having the cars' chassis#; you can check the manufacturers date at any MB dealer (they can look up every single part of the car just by chassis#).
Can one imagine what happens when one comes to the MB dealer with a completely modified 1993 C class and wants to order something that fits the installed 1996 AMG interior...
