Thanks. I found the problem. It was simply a matter of turning the nut on the drive motor clutch a few degrees to stop the slippage.

I do still need advice on the other problem (backup lights do not work and the bulbs and socket connections are good). Does this generally mean I have a bad reverse switch? My MB service CD does not go into that and how difficult is it to locate and remove? Thanks.
