I can't help you with the 24v issue, there are some other posts here on the 104 motor you might want to search on, but if you're going to buy a used 4matic, beware!

The transfer cases all start leaking, and then eventually fail when the leaking gets worse (maybe not all, but many) And the magic milage for this occurance is around 100k miles.

Mine has that milage and is leaking, and my mechanic has fixed several, and that's his opinion. If the transfercase has not been replaced, then you should perhaps consider that expense as forthcoming.

and when they work, they work well, so if he lives in the NW, or somewhere there's a lot of snow/rain, or goes up to Mt Bachelor, it will be a very surefooted vehicle.
