Unless you have an unstoppable desire for the V12, I'd suggest the S500 version of the car. I have a '96 S500 coupe and am delighted with it. The performance difffences between the two aren't that great... and, and as others have noted, the S500 will cost less to maintain.
The price you were quoted is very high... I bought my '96 a little over a year ago with 75K on the odo for about $22K. Not sure where DaveL can buy one for $10K, but would like to know!

Wonderful cars, great looks, and very fast in the 5 liter trim...
My last recommendation is that you buy a '96 or newer... '96 was the year they significantly upgraded the car with digital engine controls, new transmission, etc. etc.
