Since then, I've replaced 3 out of 4 top latches. I think this might be a common problem as changes were made to the latches in future years. I also replaced the water pump and the expansion valve. Another expensive replacement was the SRS control module for the airbag and seatbelt.
I just replaced the cruise control unit and that still hasn't cured my cruise control problem (it holds for a few minutes and then disengages).
I think the engine and tranny are pretty close to bullet proof.
I try to keep it all in the proper perspective. It's a great car and it's just about 15 years old. It still turns heads whereever I go and my wife says she can't picture me getting another sports car. She loves all of the storage room this has compared to just about any other two seater.
Good luck with your 300 SL. I think you made a wise choice.

Having the same problems with cruise control. I always thought c/c was a pretty trouble free item in all cars. I assume that it works on a vacum tube as US cars do.
