Hi Steve , I had a little too much camber on my 123 and all it was was the upper ball joints (which are attached to the upper control arms). I didn't feel a lot of play when going over bumps but I was amazed at how worn out they were when I replaced them. The problem you have could be the springs , the loose steering could be the steering box needs adjusting . The springs require a special compressor which can be rented from some parts suppliers.
