Diameter, actually closer to 1/2" larger. When I replaced the belt last winter it was a tight fit with the old compressor. I even tried by taking the three bolts out, putting the belt over the pulley and then replacing the three bolts back in but the belt was way tight. It was so tight that I thought I put in back in wrong, I rechecked everything and didn't see anything obviously wrong with my installation. I'll swallow my pride and let the father-in-law (Mercedes Master Tech) look at it to make sure I didn't make a bone head mistake. I don't see how it can go on any other way though.
