seat belt like a straight jacket

I hope someone will have some advice. I bought the '84 300SD a couple months ago. When I have the seat adjusted as I like it the seat belt is just too short. I have absolutely no room to move at all. It is extending all the way, it's just too short. Yes, I'm fat but jimmenny christmas, not that fat! I know I have seen plenty of stout men tooling around in their MB's! I have taken to pulling the passenger belt over, passing it through my belt and then clicking the passenger side latch in my holder. That gives me a bunch more moving room but when I have a passenger it's a no go. My other idea was to get a length of seat belt somewhere with the sliding latch part and tie it onto my belt and use that to connect to the floor part. Please don't lecture me on the safety aspects of this! Trying to drive without being able to lean forward or twist a bit to look for cars is pretty unsafe too. Where would I get a piece of seat belt and slider --at a parts yard? Would it have to come from a '84 300 SD? Someone told me to just put in a lap belt but I feel safer with the shoulder belt. I hope someone has some ideas, I like the car but want to be as safe as possible and also comfortable.
