I think the reason why they do that is to lure owners of the fastest growing segment ( light trucks ) to their product. People think, "hey, I have a SUV... guess I need to buy this oil, then."

You do have a point; there's no reason why Ford's 4.6L V8 would require a different oil depending on whether it was installed in a Mustang, Crown Vic, F-150, etc.
