I know, it really winds you up, especially when you want to be a decent-law abiding citizen, then you see how easy most people get off for breaking the law. Then 'they' wonder why people do it, and come up with hair-brained schemes like crushing your car if you don't have insurance which will cost proper tax-payers more ££'s. I really don't know how people with such little common sense get into power, I guess is must be the public-schools where they're taught how superior they are when they're really mostly toffs with no brains.
sorry, off on a bit of a rant there- for a comparison I pay approx $700 (about £400) insurance for my Merc (we have a cheap policy as we're in the 'burbs). $77 for state inspection/m.o.t (about 50 quid) and then $36 (about £20) for registration.
for 3 vehicles you aren't doing too bad
or course, petrol is cheaper here, but I shell out $'s for tolls here in the NE everytime I want to drive a long distance.
