I've had this problem several times over the years and where possible I've used a hacksaw or a grinder with a small fiber cutting wheel to cut a scewdriver slot in the offending screw. Make the slot deep enough to give the screwdriver plenty of bite but not deep enough to substantially weaken the screw head.
