thanks for the replies. in answer to whunters questions, no the engine was not cleaned off. the mechanic was extremely rude over the phone and charged me 75 bucks labor. this price was lowered from $120 because he "felt bad" that the part costed 136 bucks from mercedes. 250 bucks to get my car and get the hell out was what i decided to do. guenthers auto in pleasantville, nj. stay away everyone. i know when i'm being taken but i was out of state and needed the car. also thanks alan hamm for the info.
