Three things.

1. Unless I missed it someplace, you have yet to explain what is actually wrong with this engine.

2. If you look at the cylinder head, on the side with the spark plugs, you should find a number cast into the head. It will start with 115, 121 or 102 That will give you an idea of which motor you've got in the car (since it isn't the original). If you look above the oil filter, you should find an engine number stamped onto a smooth, flat spot (or a pair of holes where an engine ID plate used to be riveted in place).

3. The car is just a shell that has room for people, and a power plant that makes it go (and a few other goodies like wheels, brakes & lights). You can put in any power plant you want and make the car go (within reason). As long as the shell is worth keeping, just tear out a "bad" motor and put in a less bad one.

But, it would sure help if described what was actually wrong. -CTH

PS. The simplest solvent for freeing a stuck engine, if that's what's wrong is a 50-50 fix of tranmission fluid and diesel.
