Here in NY it is virtually impossible to have a full carry permit for a handgun, so, I am not able to have such confidence at all times. Furthermore, here in NY, if you should ever have to use the gun, you can absolutely be sure that you will be arrested for it. The only possible exception is that the dork also had a gun pointed at you. In the circumstance you described, had you hit the dork, New York State would provide you with three square meals for a very long time. Certainly different than Texas, unfortunately.
