Functional glow plugs
Healthy starter
Good battery, cables, etc.
Synthetic oil

I consider the above the minimum for effective winter starting. Plugging it in is great and takes the stress off the starter and engine. This isn't always available though so make sure it will start in the coldest possible temps. I'm anal retentive about the above and mine will all start right down to zero without any problems. RT
